Chapter 5- Granny Septima     

“Here is what I think, sweet girl. Focus on your studies. Keep a good book handy to get your mind off the little stuff. As the saying goes, “It’s the little foxes.” It means that it is the little things that can throw you off your base. This may not make sense to you now, but it will make sense over time. Go out with your happy friends. Dance after studying the books and give life the light touch. Eat healthily. Get plenty of sleep so you can stay balanced. And laugh, Rachel. Trust me, it is not that serious. The old folks used to say, ‘You are just going through.’ Just know that this too shall pass."

"And one last thing, I would suggest that you make a two-sided list. Put this young man’s name at the top. To the left, write the good things about him. For example, does he make you laugh? We know that loyalty will not make the good side. And then, to the right, list all the negative things about him. Be honest and do not hold back with the truth. If the good outweighs the bad, then he may be a keeper; but if the bad outweighs the good, you may need to do a little housecleaning. You follow?” Septima asked.

“I follow, Granny Septima,” Rachel assured her.
“Okay, Missy. You have an assignment. Take your time with it and get back to me when you feel you are ready, and we will chat further. Okay?” Septima asked.
